Counselling TrainingJames Ingram is an internationally certified alcohol and drug counsellor (ICADC), a certified addiction and gambling counsellor, and a registered professional counsellor. He also has a certificate in adult education, crisis and trauma response and a diploma in counselling skills with a degree in sociology.

James is also the Director for the Atlantic Provinces for the Canadian Professional Counselling Association. He is also a member of the Disciplinary committee as well which overlooks all registered counsellors in Canada. He also sat on the National Board of Directors with the Canadian Addiction Counselling Certification Federation for just over a year.

James is a master trainer in ASIST (Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training) and is certified as a NVCI (Non-Violent Crisis Intervention) trainer.  He is also an active trainer with Crisis and Trauma Resource Institute where he lectures other professionals on how to deal with difficult people and how to de-escalate potentially violent situations.

James started his career working with Big Brothers/Sisters while attending university. Once he completed his degree and diploma he began working with Metro Turning Point. In 2006 the shelter held up to 65 men over the age of 18 who suffered from homelessness. Within only one month at MTP, James was able to secure a job with the Salvation Army Anchorage Program as the Addiction Counsellor Supervisor. Here, James would provide one-on-one counselling, group facilitation, family counselling and would work with Corrections Canada, Department of Community Services and other government agencies to better support his clientele of 19 adult men. James stayed on with MTP for over a year and over two years with the Salvation Army.

Counselling TrainingFrom here James became employed with Success College and is coming up to his 10th year of service. During this time he also worked at Phoenix Youth Shelter for over two years as a youth care worker. James would work with youths between the ages of 16-24 who suffered from homelessness, mental health, abuse and addictions. After leaving PYS James went on to work with the Nova Scotia Home for Coloured Children (currently called Akoma) for just about a year. Here, James was a youth care counsellor who would work with youths who had been removed from their families due to unacceptable behaviour from their parents.

Once leaving NSHFCC, James would work with the IWK Mental Health and Addictions programs for over seven years. As a youth care worker, these programs included CHOICES, ACT, 4-SOUTH and COMPLEX CASE. Within these programs, James worked with teenagers who suffered from a variety of mental illnesses, addictions and in some cases abuse, suicide or homicidal behaviours.

James currently dedicates his time to educating surrounding areas about suicide awareness which is run through his private business . . . Ingram Counselling.
