In addition to traditional classroom instruction, our Instructors employ field trips, guest speakers, industry videos, team projects, online interaction, case studies, role playing, and mock simulations.

Child and Youth Care coursesSuccess College uses a modular system of training. In our Child and Youth Care courses, theoretical and practical issues are closely integrated, and learning outcomes are clearly defined.

Industry Certifications

Training aides and certifications separate our Child and Youth Care courses from other diploma programs. As part of our Diploma program, you also receive a membership in the Nova Scotia Child and Youth Care Workers Association. Graduates from this program will finish with certifications in:

  • First Aid / CPR
  • Mental Health First Aid for Youth
  • Suicide Intervention (A.S.I.S.T.)
  • Non-violent Crisis Intervention
  • Critical Incident Stress Management
  • Infectious Disease Control
  • Fire Safety
  • Medication Awareness
  • Non-aversive Behaviour Changes
  • Individual Program Planning
  • Food Handlers Course

Admissions Requirements

To be admitted to the Child and Youth Care Program, you must complete or provide the following:

  • Clear Criminal Record Check
  • Vulnerable Sector Search
  • Child Abuse Registry Check
  • 19 years of age or older
  • Grade 12 Graduation Diploma or equivalent, or completion of a standardized test to determine readiness for post secondary education *

* Homeschooled applicants, applicants with an Individual Program Plan (IPP), applicants that did not complete a Grade 12 Graduation Diploma (or equivalent), and applicants who lack sufficient recognized documentation of secondary education will need to complete a standardized test to determine academic readiness for post-secondary programs.

Graduate in 14 months

Take our Child and Youth Care courses for 12 consecutive months, and then complete 2 months of on-the-job training. During this period, students have a winter break, spring break, summer break, and are off on statutory holidays. Take our Child and Youth Care Program, and receive your Diploma in just 14 months!

Attend classes from Monday to Thursday, and have Fridays off for a job or recreation. Four day weeks limit your travel and therefore minimize your travelling costs.Attendance on Fridays is optional if students want extra help. Note: Attendance may occasionally be required to make up for unanticipated cancellations.
